The yellow Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute (JRAI) is an academic journal published bi-monthly, the full colour special issue is published once a year. The special, usually covering one subject, has a more retail look, but the interior still has the dignified typography suitable for such a journal.
This redesign was prompted by the movement of production to a new printer and publication of the first special issue. Anthropology often requires more special characters than standard typefaces with their standard 26 letters as it explores different civilisations, languages and dialects. I introduced new fonts – ITC Stone and Minion – which have a full range of typographic niceties (including phonetics), a new asymmetric grid and some simple layout and typography guidelines. I also gave the journal a new banner, making JRAI more prominent than the full name. All in all a design evolution rather than revolution.
